Poem by Dr. Jernail S. Aanand
AN EXCERPT from Extended Ode to Life.
(The poem focuses on the idea of identity and the supreme virtue of giving away)
A CAKE OF SOAP
Obsessed with its identity
the soap cake refuses to wilt
in the hands of its users
And finds itself in the dustbin
And company that produced it out of business.
When we love ourselves too much
And refuse to flow
Into the entrails of humanity
And when we reserve our love
Only for ourselves
And don’t give away anything to anybody
We are set for the dustbin
And affecting the credibility of the company
Which manufactured us.
I sometimes wonder at the destiny
Of a soap cake
It’s utility lies in its ability to wilt away
And clean the dirt
It’s identity lies not in its form
To which we also cling like mad
It’s essential identity lies in its composition
To cleanse the dirt.
Our forms are essential for us
Not the essential hallmarks which
Make us human:
Love compassion sharing giving.
