Is it love ?
Remember those days when
you would tell lies to save me from the teacher’s wrath?
Say that you forgot my notebook home ?
I think that was love
Or the time when you stood in front of me
To ward off that resounding slap ?
I think that was love
The last bite of missi roti that you loved
But kept for me for you knew that I loved it too ?
I think that was love
The pouring rain you drove through ,wet to the skin
To deliver my favourite flowers at my doorstep
I think that was love
Or when you told the sun to go away
And requested the stars to come out ?
I think that was love
The wilted flowers of jasmine
that you kept all day in your palm
To give me one whiff ?
I think that was love
The particular baby pink that suited me
How you hunted it out for me
Sweating in the sweltering heat ?
I think that was love
You never ever said it you know
I never asked you to say it either
For I knew that it was love
How easily we bandy this word about
The hallowed sacrosanct word
It pops out from every page
Stares from every corner
Are you sure it is love ?

Jasmeh !
A pronounced accent and the warmest hug
Your strong insistent demanding call
When you want attention
you ask for it as a right , which it is !
You the bud of a new garden blooming
I the old banyan tree bent with
eons of shade
Each branch touching you with tender caress
Taking root afresh in your seeking eyes
Gullible ,wide -eyed always trusting
May the universe never disappoint you pretty pearl
You the inquisitive searcher
Trying on my high heeled sandals in your baby girl feet
Tottering in gleeful hysterics
Rushing away from my arms precariously
Your uproarious laughter pealing like temple bells as I clowned around with an upturned sauce-pan
All that craziness so that you could eat another morsel of your paraanthha
You sitting astride my back and I pretending to be Horsie Horsie
Singing “Toh veh tottadeya”
Sounding uncannily like my own mother !
You jumping and sliding on my tummy with shrieks of joy
Me waiting for you to chew into your cereal as you watched your favourite cartoon show
Soon you will be a dainty little girl
With impeccable manners
Who will preen and prance for nani then ?
And who will watch the dance moves of Vijayantimala in an old Hindi film song and hum along as you gaze unblinkingly
“Udde Jab Jab zulfein Teri ?”
Grow slowly baby girl so that you relish your babyhood
Love and blessings on your 3rd birthday my precious bundle of joy Jaishuma, jaiseman , Jasmeh
