The Universe Laughs / Poem by Linda B. Scanlan

The Universe Laughs

Knowing
how you dislike negativity
hesitatingly
these words were put down
because today
is a day of struggle
and more than anything
you admire honesty……..

“I don’t want be sick anymore”
she whined to no one in particular….

Odd
is that laughter
she heard
somewhere in the distance?

The universe gets
such a kick out of our intentions……

Yes
please make your sweet plans
oh we love this part
especially
when you scrupulously
lay out the minute details
of your vision for the future
we’ll gladly watch
as your colorful desires fall apart
and like dust moats
swirling in the breeze
disappear
in front of your eyes
never to be realized
yes, those dreams………

Look at you
shocked and dismayed
did you think you were special
disease wouldn’t choose you
would pass over you
did you put the blood of the lamb
on your lintel……….

Don’t you know
lost hopes
are the stuff of raging storms
dreams that died
before they were born
crystallized
into matter
then
frenetically and spasmodically
destroy themselves
in the atmosphere
causing much misery
death and destruction
lost dreams become angry
and bitter things
seeking revenge somewhere…..

Volcanic ash
suffocating
Sand storms in the desert
blinding
blizzards producing white outs
terrifying
tsunamis of desire
drowning innocents in its path
earthquakes of disruption
breaking open
along our fault lines……..

Upheavals
are nothing more
than these
hopes
dreams
wishes
made holding dandelion weeds
unfulfilled
laying waste
on the lost horizon of time……….
