NOW I HAVE A BROTHER… / Poem by David Chukwudi Njoku

Poem by David Chukwudi Njoku

NOW I HAVE A BROTHER…

Now I’ve a brother
that’ll be my companion
no longer my computer
but this time a little friend.

Now I’ve a brother
to play with,
to help change his diaper
one to always eat with,
no longer with our neighbor.

Now I’ve a brother
that’ll call me égbon
and I’ll call him àbúró
what a wonderful companion!

Now I’ve a brother
my singing abilities
will I bring on
song of lullabies
when you’re about
to retire to bed.

Now I’ve a brother
one that’ll help me
with house chores,
go to stream with me,
a brother not a sister
I prayed for after now
my sisters would come.

Now I’ve a brother
we would play pranks on
ourselves, friends
even our parents…

“What! Yes, prank of course,
Boy Child do that all the time”

My bad brother,
sorry, if that startled you
we’re not stones
we feel, we touch
and want to be loved
but am glad to have you
and know I’ll protect
and care for you.

Now I’ve a brother
one that would
also try my patience,
get me angry,
ask me JAMB questions.

I’ll still love you
my brother
even try to offend me
I’ll make you understand me
and in turn understand you.

Now I’ve a brother
and a loving friend.
