Poem by Maria Dulce Leitao Reis
THE TENANT
I watch, somewhat amazed
A sudden rain of pebbles
It’s not hail
The hail is not black!
They are not pearls
They are not that colour either
They are not precious jewels
So what pebbles will they be?
They are cold and hard
Black as coal.
Is it basalt?
It’s the shrapnel from the heart
The poor little broke
When it was abandoned
Weather is inclement!
It became frail without lush
Convinced that love
It was his lifetime tenant!
