I THREW AWAY THE RAGS THAT COVERED ME / Maria Dulce Leitao Reis

Poem by Maria Dulce Leitao Reis

I THREW AWAY THE RAGS THAT COVERED ME

I crawled to the cross
Each good soul has to bear.
I supplicated unto Him
Oh, Lord, let me take a step up!
Beyond the allurements of this world.
In the distance
I saw a rainbow full of grace and goodness.
I set out on the path, resolute
And with my wallet full of courage
I felt bold for any challenge.
I said this…
Because I hadn’t yet faced the dangers.
Anyway
I was serenely confident, steadfast
God would not let me fall.
The challenges I had to endure
They were a plus, to make me stronger
So I could face any demon!
I crossed miles and miles
Moved by enthusiasm I didn’t feel tired
Yet the straps of my sandals
Wore away with tiredness.
Footsore, unshod, I continued my journey
The more I walked
The more the rainbow drifted away.
My feet shuffled in agony, screaming in pain.
They carried the weight of the world
So meagre of love!
I stripped myself of the ornaments of gold and silver
Discouragement was already around.
I banished anger and hatred
A stairway to heaven rose in front of me
Ornate with daisies and lilies.
At the bottom of the stairs
I found peace for the world
Mercy for the oppressed souls.
I threw away the rags that covered me
And I climbed nude!
