Reflections in the kitchen in the days of Corona
While baking bread

How much inner peace is required
To bake a loaf of bread,
To concentrate
In the sanctuary of kneading.

To touch the simple materials:
Flour, salt, water
To feel with all the senses,
The right textures of life.

How much joy is needed now
To bake one loaf of bread,
To gather the power
From the deepest human helplessness,
To knead with a swing, cultivate,
To strike the table with full force and shout:
“”I’m alive!!! I’m alive!!! I am!!!

How much power is required
To say out of the sudden difficulty:
“Behold! I have created something that breathes and lives!
This is the bread that my blessed hands created!”

Now, get up!
Hold the jug of water over the bowl!
Imagine that you are a character
Inside a miraculous Vermeer painting,
And not the way you feel right now –
Afraid and hurt
Under the great hands of God.
