I MADE MY WAY / Poem by Maria Dulce Leitao Reis

Poem by Maria Dulce Leitao Reis

I MADE MY WAY

I look inside me
and I bat my eyes
in the tome that is right in the centre.
I start leafing through the book
and the first page
catches my attention right away.
What a life, so many stories…
From the shy child
to the open-minded woman
goes a long and hard path.
I did a good job…

I made my way.

I made my way through the brambles,
gorse, briers and boulders.
Nothing stopped me from moving on.
the more blood oozed
from the torn skin,
more ironclad the will to continue.
As it progressed through the difficulties,
greater strength and dexterity
in the body and the spirit.
Are the hardships
that shape us for life.
If the suffering
made me a good human being,
I won’t do to others
what they did to me.
I learned to be an empath,
attentive, insightful.
Many of the situations I lived
were an eye-opener.
I don’t harm others,
but I won’t let
that they harm me either.

I learned to love myself.

I’m important to me,
I will defend myself from all attacks
with nails and teeth.
I will do the same with others.
injustice and bad faith make me a jaguar.
Everyone must do the same.
We are all human beings.
If each one of us puts ourselves
in the other’s shoes,
I know it’s uncomfortable
to put ourselves in the other’s shoes,
that’s empathy,
but we realize that we can’t do to others
what we don’t want them to do to us.
If we all fight fairly for love and peace
we will live in a good world
for all living beings.
It’s utopian but not impossible.

Let’s seek the truth within us
and let our self speak,
which is like saying
let us follow our conscience
our cornerstone!
