UNIFORM / Poem by Dr. Jernail S. Aanand

Poem by Dr. Jernail S. Aanand
When he got into the uniform
He was given training
How to conduct himself
And whenever he deviated
Someone came from the rubble
To remind him of his avowals
Of his pledges
To keep the dignity of the uniform
The uniform necessitated him
To make no distinctions,
As it was the same everywhere
So equal so unerringly the same.
Not even the uniform,
The parts it covered
Were the same
What differed in each case
Was the mind which gave him
An individual identity
The mirror asked me to strip
And look at myself
And reminded me of the grand uniform
I insisted on my clothes
But no, the mirror was steadfast.
You are not these clothes.
You are not these words
You are this body
This skin
You are this singular uniform.
This uniform was given to you
By great God
Remember your responsibilities
Your avowals…
Will you prove disloyal to your uniform?
And to your God
Who gave you commission
In the divine army?
