Freedom

In the window a pigeon,
and her chicks are red-feathered,
and when the man
in the prison uniform
tries to touch them,
the bird summons
a mother’s might.
Only just hatched from
the egg and
already in danger.
Those still inside look out
at freedom,
and she builds a nest, pressed against the bars,
defying their long fingers
with a flaunt
of her freedom.


חופש

בַּחַלּוֹן יוֹנָה
וְגוֹזָלֶיהָ פַּרְוָתָם גִ’ינָגִ’ית
כְּשֶׁהָאִישׁ בְּכָתֹם מְנַסֶּה לָגַעַת בָּהֶם
הִיא מְגַיֶּסֶת עָצְמַת אֵם
רַק בָּקְעוּ מִן הַבֵּיצָה
וּכְבָר בְּסַכָּנָה
אֵלֶּה שֶׁבִּפְנִים מַבִּיטִים אֶל הַחֹפֶשׁ
וְהִיא בּוֹנָה לָהּ קֵן
נִצְמֶדֶת לַסּוֹרְגִים
מַתְרִיסָה בִּפְנֵיהֶם
אֶת הַחֹפֶשׁ שֶׁלָּהּ
