STENCH / Poem by Jagdish Prakash

Poem by Jagdish Prakash

STENCH

Their half formed words
Singe the tongue,
Putrid stench clogs nostrils
Bodies consigned to trenches
Silence explodes with bomb blasts
A school burns, a hospital destroyed
Do they sleep well in Moscow?
Stench rises from human debris
And mingles in dead cells of your conscience
It won’t dissolve in vodka shots
Nor in rose flavoured ice cream
Tolstoy
Chekhov
Dostoevsky
Pushkin
Gogol
Pasternak
Yevtushenko
Stravinsky
Rubinstein
Anna Pavlova
Will your name figure with them ever?
One who writes destiny of people with blood and gore
Soft strains of Swan Lake dissolve in tears of babies crying for the dad
Who won’t return
Don’t rob their smiles
Stop this war
You won’t be able to stop this stench
Reaching your bed chamber!
