I HAVE A PLACE TO GO / Poem by Maria Dulce Leitão Reis

Poem by Maria Dulce Leitão Reis

I HAVE A PLACE TO GO

My almond-shaped honey-colored eyes …
Skirted with the shadow of your contempt …
They miss the glitter of yesteryear …
Now spleens like a sheet of paper …

In them lives the night, rude and distrustful …
They lost the grace of the time they were loved …

Love is wonderful, it makes people happy …

I will not ask why you stopped loving me …
But I asked many times why you loved me …
And you never wanted to answer …
You didn’t want to lie to yourself
Or assume what was predictable …
You said I knew the answer …
How could I know
If every time you sowed more doubts …
And from these seeds
Was born the offense, the impropriety, the indifference …
From time to time there was a rose …

I always thought I had some gifts and qualities …
I heard God saying that , the day I was born …
I know I make mistakes, that I have defects ….
I didn’t know that there were so many
But with them I grew …

I’m not going to make a drama …
Life is already a circus …
Did it bring your love back?
Follow your destiny
Free yourself from this crazy woman

I woke up with eyes shadowed with hope …
And the stolen glow of the stars that dot the sky …

I have a place to go …
Dreamed , since I was a child …
I don’t know if it’s far or near, I know it’s beyond …

I already fit the sandals
I go in search of what makes me good…
