PEBBLES / Poem by Laksmisree Banerjee

Poem by Laksmisree Banerjee

PEBBLES

from dawn to dusk I walked
along the shore-line
in glorious haze
in sunlit and tear-lit trance
collecting, counting
my precious pebbles
those I would never part with
possessed proudly
and closeted in my heart
like gems scooped out of
the earthly womb……

pebbles of alluring hues
smeared with silver and gold dust
unmindful of the fast changing colours of the sky
till sundown…..

in darkness the blizzard and billows
swept me into the rumbling deep
as the fierce waves threw me back
my rich pebbles lost in the sea
the lone boatman called me out
it was time for me to go
beyond the Void……

after generations have gone by
the sea rolls back
as I see my seal on the sandy shores
the children playing with my glittering pebbles
glazed and multihued in
their balmy cupped palms
offerings for Eternity….
