THE TIME WHEN SOMEBODY ELSE CHOOSES A HUSBAND FOR YOU / Poem by Ibrahim Honjo

Poem by Ibrahim Honjo

THE TIME WHEN SOMEBODY ELSE CHOOSES A HUSBAND FOR YOU

Where are you riding on your white horse
decorated with sterling silver
where are you taking your virginity
through the sand dunes of Africa
between faded palm trees or
in the rare oases of the great Sahara

where did these sand warriors stay
with their fiery black horses
in wedding uniforms
in whose courtyard, surrounded by dunes

you’ll start off with a young smile
to sacrifice your virginity
to an unknown prince you have not chosen
your white robes of silk
brought by caravans from distant China
will be covered with a red veil

if you’ve never seen your lover win
this night when they meet face to face
in a spacious room decorated for the solemn act

whether their young and innocent eyes
will look like pearls
and turn into a thousand shining stars
transformed into love at first sight

whether to recognize the touch of their lips
and their naked bodies in rapture awaiting
or will it be a delirium of fear of flying
or sand thrown into surprised lovers’ eyes

tell me,
where are you going in this unannounced moment
where is the voice of your heart
has it been taken away along with your virginity

Ibrahim Honjo, from the book “HOW TO TOUCH ETERNITY DOWN THE MAHALLA” 2016
