WE’RE ALL THE SAME / Poem by Maria Dulce Leitao Reis

Poem by Maria Dulce Leitao Reis

WE’RE ALL THE SAME

We track different meanders
but we’re all the same.

We all came from the same place,
we were all born the same way,
we are all going to the same place.
During the walk of life
we take different steps,
adopt different behaviours,
we move away from human nature,
some more, others less
and still others, not really.
We get closer to nature
of wild animals,
some more, some less
and still others, not really.

We track different meanders,
but we’re all the same.

When we die,
we all follow the same destiny
and we only have a small plot,
exactly in our measure.
Everything ends here;
greed, envy, hatred,
selfishness, trickery, inheritance
and whoever stays do not learn.
We strangle each other,
for half a dozen cents
and a few feet of land.

We track different meanders,
but we’re all the same.

My life was full of obstacles,
but I never let
the demons of my past
turn me cruel.
I have the spirit of a lion
with incredible strength.
I am kind and lovely
until my trust is broken.
I don’t have time for fake friends.
I just share my time
with people who are real,
honest and down to earth.
I don’t get angry often,
but when that happens, run!
I have no patience for trivialities
and from now on
I will not waste my time
with liars or drama queens.
I don’t have time
and I don’t want to have time
for people like that.
I don’t care
if they think I’m a snob or an idiot,
because I know myself
and I know I’m not like that.
I don’t care who thinks
they are the last cookie in the package,
often
the last cookie in the package,
is all crumbling
and I like whole people,
people who are
neither hypocritical nor cynical,
people who cry, laugh, shout, jump,
love, kiss and hug,
say what they think and feel,
without fear of being judged.

We track different meanders,
but we’re all the same.

Does anybody out there
want to be part of my gang?
