Poem by Gulyaz Aliyeva (Azerbaijan)
Why must you love me, Motherland?
Why must you love me, Motherland ?
I couldn’t be your stone, your land ,
Icouldn’t be your leaf,
On top of the tree.
Why must you love me, Motherland ?
I couldn’t be your garden, your garden and parterre ,
I couldn’t be your brown horse ,
Obedient, with a saddle-bridle,
Which closed in stable .
Why must you love me, Motherland ?
I couldn’t be your river,
I couldn’t be your spring,
Which flowing silently along the village road,
I couldn’t be your trail to village .
Why must you love me, Motherland?
I couldn’t be your forest,
I couldn’t be looted ,
I couldn’t be your violet,
Which hid at the bottom of the bush
Trembling from the cold,
Why must you love me, Motherland?
I couldn’t be as your Fazil
I couldn’t be as your Shirin,
I couldn’t be Mubariz, who loved you more than yourselves ,
I was just … Gulaz…
Why must you love me, Motherland?
