About the Book
This book, Essence of Sanatana Dharma, is a work of much religious research and soul searching in the heartland of “Sanatana Dharma”. In my effort to make it as accurate as possible, I took an imaging journey into the past to discover more of what I already knew, or thought I knew, and the essence of what I would discover. It is prudent to admit this journey is a long way to go.
… several Cantos of the Srimad Bhagavatam, Bhagavad Gita As It Is, Sri Tulasidasa Ramayana, The Ramayan of Valmiki, The Visnu Purana and several other texts, including lectures of Swami Vivekananda in his address to the Chicago Parliament of Religions held from September 11-27, 1893 and his lecture on Vedanta in 1897 at Lahore Pakistan.
~ Author: Damyantee Devi Dabydeen
It is indeed a pleasure to write a Foreword on the book called Essence of Sanatana Dharma for it throws light upon the ancient work called Upanishads with proper commentaries added to it. The main object of the author is to make the inexpressible into expressible, the unknown to be known to all. Our author Damyantee Devi Dabydeen tries her best to bring the indecipherable knowledge about the Brahman to the notice of all, her emphasis on the need to chant the Gayatri mantra to enable all to get deliverance from sins and the assurance given to all to chant the mantra to burn away the layers of impurities covering the mind that are accumulated through countless births, and bestows the vision of Supreme Consciousness on all, is very amazing.
Despite the world being in a hectic condition, the call made by God to focus on the soulful book is indeed a blessing in disguise to mankind. The book begins with the entire world being one family and the Brahma being the Absolute Truth, the all-pervasive nature of it, the only real thing in the world which is called the “Over Soul or Brahma”, the Oneness of a thing prevailing in all.
The text abounds with quotes of the sages like Ramakrishna Paramahamsa and Vivekananda and even the most significant quotes including the saying of Luke about God. The author wants all to realize the presence of the Brahma in all and the realization attained by any will be enlightened to see all as the manifestation of the Absolute reality. The author elucidates her thought by saying that if a man realizes the Atman, the Divine self within, he sees the same self in all, then he will be free from misery and sorrows.
The first section, the Vishnu Bhagavan shows the three hypostases of the Lord with the spirit to carry out creation, preservation and destruction. The author gathers all the factors regarding the unfolding of the truth about Shiva being the form of Hari. The truth about Brahma being Hiranyagarbha, the appearance of Vishnu in the forms of Purusha, the spirit, Kala the time and the discrete and the indiscrete knowledge about things, the Vishnu the Supreme Soul about being the substance of the world, subsequently followed by the production of the five elements, including the change of seasons, matter in Nature bringing about the geographical formation, the formation of the Brahma in the shape of an egg, clothed by elements resulting in the stature of Brahma slowly getting darker in to Rudhira and the world being swallowed by him, and after how the new world being created by Vishnu — all things are minutely described by the author.
The Vishnu Purana deals with the details about Vishnu in 18 Puranas as describing the parts of Vishnu from head to foot, including the story of Lakshmi Devi, her various forms suiting to the avatars of Vishnu, showing the need to read the slogas to get redeemed from misery is well stated.
The author glorifies Narayana as the Omniscient source all-pervading the universe. Then the descriptions of the mantras on Narayana and Shri Lakshmi help mankind get wealth.
The third section is about the sons of Brahma helping their father in the creation of the earth. The book abounds with the story of Naradha, the Godhead, the story of Nara-Narayana, standing for
Dharma and Righteousness, the Varaha Avatar taken to save the earth from filth and the ninth Avatar called King Prthu wished by all to save the kingdom from all kinds of ills and the Matsya Avatar taken at the time of Pralayam, the Kurma avatar taken by Vishnu to help all get the nectar churned from the sea and the Narasimha avatar taken to punish the king Hiranyakasipu with his nails.
In the book our author illustrates the stories by means of quotes with explanations.
In the fifteenth Avatar called Vamana, God appearing like a dwarf asked for a piece of land from the king Bali and made him realize his mistake.
In the fifth section after the invocation made to the Godhead Ramachandra, the author deals with the Scene of Sri Rama, the songs sung by Valmiki about Ramayana, from the birth of Rama to the breaking of the bow and all mantras to be chanted are given in detail in this book. The next section describes the advent of the source of all incarnations called Krishna, the story of the Lord with various mantras from the Mulam to Shree Krishna’s friend Sudama.
The next section shows Bala Rama as the expansion of Sri Krishna which abounds with songs and mantras to be chanted by all. The succeeding section is about the emergence of the Lord Buddha as the Godhead to lead all on the path towards the ultimate Reality and it abounds with Mantras, songs relating to the mode of worship of Buddha and the philosophy advocated by him is found to be highly beneficial to mankind.
The author is very keen on including the Kalki Avatar as it had already been foretold in Srimad Bhagavatam. As per the prediction, the Godhead is supposed to be born in a Brahmin family and then he would become a warrior at the end of Kaliyuga to set everything right like Shri Krishna. Likewise again the Godhead called Vishnu appeared in the human form called Chaitanya Prabhu in West Bengal in Navadvipa to set the land for only the devotees by making all sing the keerthanas in pursuit of God. The most elevating are the pancha tattva mantras which are now in vogue.
Thus from the start to the finish the author traced the evolution of Godhead since the Genesis of creation and also brought to our eyes the vast expanse of the Brahma with its triple powers to maintain everything in the world. All the avatars are beautifully delineated with pictures of Godhead.
The list of incarnations of the Personality of Godhead given herein is not complete. It is only a partial view of all the incarnations. There are many others, such as Sri Hayagriva, Hari, Hamsa, Prsnigarbha, Vihhu, Satyasena, Vaikuntha, Sarvabhauma, Visvaksena, Dharmasetu, Sudhama, Yogesvara, etc. in the bygone ages.
Indeed, it is a boon sent by God to make all know about Godhead in various incarnations. The central idea implied in this book is about the evolution of Godhead from being an embryo of an Egg through various stages culminating in the creation of human beings becoming the Incarnate like Shri Krishna, Shri Rama, Kalki and so on. As the book Essence of Santana Dharma is written by a God elated soul, this book will remain like our ancient Vedas for ever showing guidance to mankind
making all feel as if members of a single family and of being the part of Divinity. In fact it will make all find a common sense of brotherhood among all, driving out hatred, enmity and violence from the soil. The aptness of the title Essence of Santana Dharma lies in Sanatana being one of the Kumaras of Brahma, being too Godhead in bringing about creation and enlightenment to mankind.
Thus the book is supposed to be a Beacon of light towards the path of Ultimate Truth — an undeniable truth.

The spiritually discerning and soulfully stirring book titled “Essence of Sanatana Dharma” delineated by the formidable and paramount writer of deep-rooted eternal awakening, distinguished Damyantee Devi Dabydeen is an incredible work of religious flavour, eastern aestheticism, Godly wavelength and righteous pedigree. So, when I have been asked to cobble together a preface for this book, I have thought about what to insert in connection with the book which is undoubtedly flawless to the core. Unlike typical prefaces written in relation to various published books, I would like here to dwell upon only the type of monumental impact this once in a millennium book does have in retuning our hearts to lift them to the bosom of Almighty to get solace from him. There are certain enduring and endeavouring pillars that make this book so evocative, relevant and massively right on target. In the course of the writing of the preface of this book, I shall concentrate upon these touchstones which lend egalitarian and eclectic propensity to this book. The cardinal ideas that embellish this book of high wisdom are brought forth through the following paragraphs.
The religious texts emerging out of the Indian context always promote a set of guidelines, the human beings do have to follow to attain eternal salvation. The Puranas and Upanishads are not the preserves of anybody rather the ideas in them are applicable to the entire people of the world. In fact, the ideas inherent in these texts are universal in nature. The universality of these ideas makes them comprehensive and holistic as well. The ancient wisdom so visible in these texts can be utilised for bringing a new awakening to the world so that the anthropocentric attitude towards life can be reset to reform this world. As the world stands at the crossroads at the moment, we need to reorient it with principles gleaned out of the sustainable texts like Puranas and Upanishads.
The ideologies of Ramakrishna Paramahamsa and Swami Vivekananda are dotted with that transcendental stance towards life in general. They promoted belief patterns which were not based upon mobilisation and engineering of the people under entities and structures rather focused their attention upon the salvation of the human souls in a stark manner. In fact, their lives were the messages, they conveyed to the entire world. Ramakrishna Paramahamsa propounded a world view wherein he found the presence of divinity in all objects in this world and Swami Vivekananda’s concept was all about a religious movement that would take into consideration the problems of the last, the least and the lost in this world of inequalities, injustices and imbalances. The true God experience has everything to do with the generation of the principles of humility and humanity to save the world from moral decadence and ethical degeneration.
Gayatri Mantra is not mere utterance rather it contains a whole lot of meanings in it. It is a mantra that opens up our hearts to receive that heavenly experience of indescribable, blissful and inexhaustible nature. The serenity that is brought into the interiors through the pronouncement of this mantra can propagate down to humanity carrying out a cleansing process upon the impurities
accumulated in the minds. The exposure to Gayatri Mantra does lead to a cathartic effect of the purification and purgation of the cheap instincts, emotions, feelings and sentiments in all of us. The Gayatri Mantra can soften the hard hearts, melt the intransigent attitude and mellow down the bellicose or aggressive tone and tenor in individuals of various persuasions and hues and colours. In the midst of the hustle and bustle and tensions, worries and concerns of the present era, this mantra is a pathway to true redemption all the way.
The importance accorded to the rock solid principles springing forth from other holy texts is the specialty of this book of rare pedigree. When everything good is absorbed with an attitude of positivity, then the truth goes through a trajectory of consequences rather than travelling through a pathless land. All the holy texts only have one message to convey to humanity, that is none other than peace for the entire world. No holy texts advocate anything that is considered as detrimental to the cherished principles of life such as tolerance, non-violence, trust, hope, faith, honesty and sincerity. The cross religious approach synonymous with this book adds a beauty of consolidated intensity to this book.
The deities of spotless actions and reactions are always inspirational for human beings to surge ahead in their life inspite of the travails weighing down their lives from different quarters. The deities referred to in the book have always advocated for the rights of the righteous people in the society. The triumph of good over evil is the didactic lesson that should be imparted to human beings so much so that they do have the mental fortitude, forbearance and patience to face up to all eventualities in life fair and square. The deities of Vishnu Bhagavan and Shiva are the embodiments of truth and fair play and if we human beings follow their footsteps without cluttered and biased minds, then the attainment of eternity is a sure realisation for all of us.
This book is highly concentrated upon the need to focus upon God in this worldly life we lead. The primary goal of life is not all about chasing the worldly possessions rather this life here on earth must be wholly devoted, dedicated and committed to the will of the Almighty God. This world is an illusion or this world is a miniature form of the wider and perfect world that is envisaged for us there in heaven. The things in this world are transitory, subjected to decay and kept on changing, such a changing world is not real. What is real is not confined to the parameters of this world or the things that don’t change, limitless, eternal and unchanging are very much real which we can only come across there in heaven. So the fundamental motive that drives us forward in this world should not be the wonders and the enjoyments of this world rather we need to give utmost attention to nurturing our souls for the life to come after our endgame here on this terminable world. So, being dissolved in the larger reality of Atman or Brahman must be the essence of our life.
Honourable literary figure of colossal humane heart, Damyantee Devi Dabydeen has done full justice to this book of holy incantations. The soul of this mighty personality is reverberating with spiritual love for humanity. The true humanism in her is manifested through this book of
unparalleled magnitude. This book is great not because of the eternal aspects related to it rather it is a book of sum and substance solely because of its ability to transcend above all bigoted articulations of the world to seek clarity and immaculateness when it comes to Godly ways and means. Let this venture of multiple and commingling perspectives have right resonance on people coming from Eastern and Western societies alike. My best wishes to her in all her future endeavours in the field of spirituality.
