The Mellow Autumn Sun / Poem by Lily Swarn

Poem by Lily Swarn

The Mellow Autumn Sun

Had countless birds suddenly dropped dead
Falling pell mell on the moss green turf ?

Shadows loomed and hovered ominously
Watching voyeuristically as each new one fell in a listless stupor

Or were they really the same glossy leaves
That perked up the arrogant branches in spring and summer ?

No one knows when the final curtain call will come
Only the leaves know their fate as the mellow autumn sun ripens the luscious peaches
