Dr. Armeli Quezon: An Educator, A Poet, Writer, Critic, Director and Scriptwriter of Presentations, Painter, Private Editor, Cultural and Interpretative Dance Choreographer, Declaimer and an Intuitive Lady. Born in Quezon City to Concordia and Gonzalo Sombilon Quezon ( Nephew of President Manuel Luis Quezon of the Commonwealth of the Philippines), her Father passed away when she was barely a month old. She grew up in a peaceful, nature-blessed Spanish-type house surrounded by a huge balcony , overlooking an orchard of Mangoes, Star Apple, Sineguelas, Santol, Banana Plants, vegetable and flowering gardens with Orchids, Sampaguita, Rosal, Giant Hibiscus, Ilang-Ilang and Gardenia. In front was a small winding river that irrigated the rice fields.
Her friends were her many first cousins who helped swept their front yard, often teasing each other who could finish first each allocated portion of the more than a hectare ground. They were the only one who had a big artesian well with a huge pump. During water shortage everyone in Paltok, San Francisco del Monte, Quezon City, would request for water for family consumptions. The St. Joseph Basketball Team of Fernando Poe, Jr. had her as its Muse. Her photos were displayed in Kodak Stores giving due recognition to her being a young teen ager model. Her agility helped her in the 1 ½ km walk to school, church and store.
Endowed with patience, firm determination and innate intelligence, she was with honors in the Elementary School with thousands of co-graduates. Her scholarships in High School, College, Master of Arts and Doctorate made her schoolings remarkable.
She taught in the famous exclusive school for the elite, the Holy Ghost College at Mendiola, near the Malacanang Palace, immediately after her graduation from the Philippine Normal University in Manila. Her prowess in writing was extensively used in her school, District and Division of City Schools. She was their researcher and writer of reports, including the Five Year Development Plan and Ten Year Development Plan, which were required by the Department of Education.
She served as a Science Coordinator, Guidance Counselor, Officer-in-Charge, Adviser to the School Organ, LITTLE Editors, Artists Painters Club, Dramatic Guild, Boy Scouts of the Philippines National Trainer, Science Club Advisers of the Philippines‘ NCR President and National Level’s VP, Demonstration Teacher of District IV, National Science Development Board Science Scholar in UP and UST, First Demonstrator of Methods of Individual Teaching during the Administrators’ National Conference in UST, Evening College Instructor in Methods of Teaching, Civics, Guidance and Counseling, English for College Students with Argumentation and Debate.
Armeli was awarded as an Outstanding Teacher in School, in the District, in the Division. The Knights of Columbus in Makati City recognized her educational contributions to the school and community, thus awarding her with the most coveted Most Outstanding Teacher Plaque. She was awarded as OUTSTANDING ALUMNA of the Philippine Normal University ( P N U ) in Manila, where she, during her College Days, portrayed Maria Clara in the play of Dr. Severino Montano, won in debate, gymnastics, and garnered the highest vote as Officer of the Student Government, making her as the most loved and most popular student leader. She represented PNU in the different National Students Conferences.
Her poems were in the National Convention/Conferences’ Newsletters and THE TORCH, PNU’s School Organ. The Voluntary Service Club, composed of the PNU Student Leaders, had her as its President. The Daily Thoughts for the Day near the Dean of Student Affairs Office was penned by her.
After her early retirement, she migrated to USA, taught with the Los Angeles Unified School District, California, mentored new teachers, planned and directed the school’s first International Multi Cultural Dance Festival, got scholarships in Spanish and Science, updated her Computer Skills at the University of California Los Angeles (UCLA) during Sundays. Her artistry gave way to the long halls and big auditorium’s decorations during festivities. Her room was the showcase of the school during visitations from the District Office and other entities. Her poems were published in funone.com, Into the Mystical, Treasures of Poems in America, The International Library of Poetry, etc.
Her love for arts began in her early childhood. She often penciled caricatures and poetic lines up in her treehouse. She used to gather stems, flowers, seeds, barks, and used them to form some patterns or media to enhance her drawings, which she continued in her entries to the NCR’s Use of Indigeneous Materials. Her poems were rhythmical.
In 2000, her poems emerged with a very unique style of her own: The end of her preceding line is the beginning word of its succeeding line.
After retirement, her family transferred from California to New Mexico, a USA state surrounded by Arizona, Utah, Colorado, Oklahoma and Texas. Here, she was awarded a Plaque for Educational Contribution. Her 6 years of Cultural Chairmanship was marked by MOST outstanding performances in the different communities and facilities. Her scriptwriting and directing of the TIMELINE CULTURAL PRESENTATION during the Filipino American National Historical Society. National Conference in New Mexico, was greatly applauded and appreciated by the attendees of more than 20 USA States’ Officers and members.
Armeli is the founder of FEELINGS INTERNATIONAL, whose membership has reached 1,112 members from all over the world in less than a month of existence, and still growing. In her desire to inspire others to do their best with the intellects, skills and knowledge bestowed on them by their Creator, she made herself available for free lessons and consultation in writing, starting poetry and painting.
