Poem by N. M. Leepsa
Life is Tough, so am I
I
A new life may not be born from my womb
I will give birth to motherhood from my heart
I will celebrate life with the baby blessed by God
I applaud myself to be a mother of those beautiful girls
The world stopped me but I have the strength to be a single mother
I wear the courage of raising the girls beyond these society challenges
Life is tough, but I bear the strength, a little more
II
I know it’s painful for a father to know his child got a weak heart
I know it’s difficult to cure her as I have no money for hospital expenses
I know it feels like a huge stone hit my heart and life seems upside down
I know life is challenging but I have the strength of facing struggles of life
I will fight against all odds to save my daughter’s life from the grave illness
I will make her every day special filled with love, joy, and happiness
Life is tough, but I bear the strength, a little more
III
I know life is a sport where I have to keep playing
I have taken the pledge to make my country proud
A gift of the gold medal that my country would taste success
I will keep my country’s flag flying in the sky with glory
I will fight against all odds leaving my fear far away
I am a fighter and I won’t accept defeat until I win
Life is tough, but I bear the strength, a little more
IV
The evils of casteism and social inequality may be harsh on me
No house for me, so food & water for me, no clothes for me
Poor, untouchable, uneducated, are the words tagged on me
Still, I am not afraid of trials and tribulations to get my right
I will fight for getting my education garnering for knowledge
I will struggle no matter how many times one pulls my legs
Life is tough, but I bear the strength, a little more
V
Some said me I am short, some said me I am fat
Some said me I am bald, some said me I am black
Some raped me outside, some assaulted me inside the home
Some blamed me for being single, some laughed at my age
Some killed me inside the womb, some burned me alive
Yet I am the woman with enough strength to live my dreams
Life is tough, but I bear the strength, a little more
Looking at the moon I saw there are a million stars inside me that form a sun to give you light so that you can brighten the earth when it’s dark when it’s tough when life wants some strength.
