She Walks Alone / Poem by Linda B. Scanlan

Poem by Linda B. Scanlan

She Walks Alone

Solitude accompanies her days
lonely
she wraps her own arms around her
the autumn breeze whips up suddenly
causing her to coil inward …..
Welcoming the change of season
darkness arrives earlier now
imperceptibly
always sensitive to slight changes
in the atmosphere
tears more easily hidden in shadow…..

The empty barn called to her
she turned away
walking toward home
amid the wild flowers
are those zinnias
walking slowly
intentionally
inhaling deeply their heady
intoxicating fragrance
reminding her of his musky scent…..

Their barn ……

Meeting there so often
they loved the way fading light caught dancing dust motes
unable to bear the memory
she walked away defeated
empty of life
the barn stands alone
horses gone
dreams galloping off into the moonlight…….
