WALKING ON RIVER FRONT IN PRAGUE / Poem by Jagdish Prakash

WALKING ON RIVER FRONT IN PRAGUE

On tiptoes
I walk on these cobbled pavements
Joining the footprints
Of anonymous times
Witnessed by these cold stones.
Sighing with a burden of history,
Of heavy footfalls of
Legions of knights, the noble men,
Processions of kings,
Their pompous armies,
Wobbling feet of a barefoot muse,
or of Kafka.
Reverberations .of history
I hear in these cold stones
As slowly I walk
Over the Charles bridge.
Witnessed by sillhouttes of saints and kings
Standing in stony silence in silent rows
I pause and hear
The trumpets of times
Rising over the muted moans
Slowly I descend the steps and
Sit on the river bank
Joining the song of ripples.
