LA RAMBLA / Poem by Jagdish Prakash

Poem by Jagdish Prakash

LA RAMBLA

Printed with the footprints of desire
This street, pulsating with a passion
Fills the senses with a freaky joy, voluptuously brute and vagabond,
The unending stream of footfalls continues,
morning till morning
Soaking the senses in the magic
That’s you , La Rambla!
None knows when day merges with night
And night appears in a stripper’s attire
Ready to tickle the senses
Of the revellers soaked in the night’s sensuality
Strolling from end to end
They drag their tired feet in an eatery
Where notes of wild music from a nearby band
Croon over large mugs of beer.

Shimmering lights create somber silhouettes over the tree tops
The string of old buildings recall their hoary past
Brooding over the lights of meditating lampposts
Carryover of this spell lingers
Till the last glow of lights
Merges with the crimson horizon
And settles on the top of Columbus monument
Where the great explorer still stands
With his finger raised
Towards his land of discovery,
He called India !

* La Rambla is a 1.2 km tree lined street in Barcelona, Spain which is very popular with visitors for walks, eating places, music and revelry.
