A LIBYAN FREEDOM FIGHTER

(translated from Arabic written while in prison)

My only illness is being
at al Agailla camp, the
imprisonment of my tribe
and the long way from home

My only illness is the loss
of my beloved, good
looking strong people on
top of camels and best-looking horses

My only illness is having

to lose my dignity at my
advanced age and the
loss of our finest people,
the ones we cannot do without

My only illness is the
torturing of our young
women, with their bodies
exposed

My only illness is the loss
of sweet and good
people and having to be
ruled by grotesque
people whose straight
faces show nothing but
misery

My only illness is the
broken hearts, the falling
tears and all the herds
with no protector of
care-taker.

SEBAHAGIAN DARIPADA PUISI OMAR MUKHTAR – PEJUANG KEBEBASAN LIBYA
(diterjemahkan daripada Bahasa Arab yang ditulis ketika dalam penjara).

Kesakitan ku hanyalah
berada di kem al Agailla,
puak ku yang terpenjara
dan jauhnya aku dari kampung halaman

Kesakitan ku hanyalah
kehilangan orang tersayang
manusia-manusia tampan dan
handal menunggang unta dan
kuda yang kelihatan sangat hebat

Kesakitan ku hanyalah
kehilangan harga diri
di umur yang lanjut ini
dan kehilangan orang-orang handal
yang amat kita perlukan

Kesakitan ku hanyalah
melihat penyeksaan wanita muda kita,
dengan tubuh mereka terdedah

Kesakitan ku hanyalah

kehilangan orang-orang kita
yang baik dan lembut
dan terpaksa tunduk
di bawah kuasa
orang-orang hodoh
yang wajahnya terus terang
tidak mempamerkan apa-apa melainkan
kesengsaraan

Kesakitan ku hanyalah
kelukaan, air mata
yang mengalir melihat
semua ternakan terbiar
tanpa gembala yang melindungi

    • Thank you Linn for your comment. Thats what touched me most about this poem written more than 80 years ago. Its a beauty and deep and soulful. It was definitely not on our era, yet poetry transcend time space and culture.
